About Pentathlon

Modern pentathlon is an Olympic sport comprising five disciplines: epee fencing, swimming, equestrian show jumping, and a combined run/shoot event. The sport was developed for the first modern Olympic Games in 1912 by the founder, Pierre de Coubertin.

Coubertin was inspired by the pentathlon event in the ancient Olympic games, circa 776 B.C., which tested the skills of the ideal soldier. Similarly, modern pentathlon tests the skills that a 19th century cavalry soldier would have needed to survive behind enemy line: riding an unfamiliar horse, shooting, fencing, swimming, and running.

Modern pentathlon is one of the most grueling Olympic sports, testing speed, endurance, skill, focus, and strategy. In a pentathlon competition, pentathletes compete in all five disciplines over the course of one long day.

Modern Pentathlon World Cups

Each year, the UIPM, the international modern pentathlon federation, awards five World Cup events to cities around the world. At these competitions, athletes have the opportunity to earn qualifying points for the World Cup Final and the Olympic Games. The Palm Springs/Rancho Mirage World Cup will be the first time the United States has hosted a World Cup since 1999.

The 2011 US World Cup may also mark the first time that laser pistols will be used in a World Cup competition instead of compressed air or C02 pellet guns. And the 2012 US World Cup will be a qualifying event for the Summer Olympics in London, England.

We are expecting approximately 200 athletes from 30 to 50 countries, along with their coaches and delegations. There will be four days of competition, with men and women competing separately in semifinals to qualify for the two days of final competition.

How to keep up with events:
